After a lengthy battle with heart complications, John passed away August 9th, at the age of 63. John was raised in the "Garden of the Gods" area of Carmichael, and attended Starr King, El Camino, and American River College. At El Camino, he lettered in both football and wrestling. John lived most of his adult life in the Carmichael area, managing local pizza parlors. He remained a life-long Niners, Giants, and Warriors fan.
John was a social organizer: celebrations, sporting events, softball teams, and road trips. He was a consummate host, and with John there was usually a BBQ and an ice chest involved. He became an outstanding cook, and was generous to a fault in his entertaining. For John, it was, "the more the merrier", and there was ALWAYS room for one more at his table. Over the last 40 years, John's gatherings secured a loyalty from family and friends. As his health deteriorated and he needed more support, many of these people stepped up. All they would say is, "John payed it forward for years, and I still owe him."
John was preceded in death by his parents, Gordon and Helen Schaefer, as well as his sister, Vicki Hunter. He is survived by his two sons, Trent and Andrew (Rebecca), and grandchildren, Makenna, Paige, and Andrew Jr. He is also survived by his sister Terri Cherwin, and his brother Scott (Sylvia) Schaefer.
A memorial service for John will be held at Mt. Vernon Memorial Park in Citrus Heights, on Friday August 25th at 10 AM. A celebration of his life will follow at the home of his good friend Jay. Maps will be provided at the service.
