Nickell, Herbert "Herb" Eugene. ?Herb passed away Tuesday, March 31, 2015 at the age of 87. ?He was born April 24, 1927 to the late Dewey and Calvern (Brady) Nickell. ?
With a compassionate heart and patient spirit, Herbert was a blessing in the lives of everyone he met. ?He was a long time resident of Rancho Cordova, California, and there was no one he met who wasn't greeted with his amazing smile and full attention. ?Herb was devoted to his family. ?He will be deeply missed; his timeless legacy will remain alive in the hearts and lives of those closest to him.

Herbert graduated from McClatchy High School and Sacramento City College. He served in U.S. Army in the Korean War and in the Civil Service in Vietnam as an Aircraft Mechanic. He worked for 34 years at McClellan Air Force Base working on numerous airplanes primarily the F4 Phantom, F-104, F-106 and F-111 Aircraft. ?Herb was a handyman extraordinaire for anyone in any need at any time. ?He was active in the McClellan Breakfast Club. ?He loved traveling, antique cars, Ford, music, Frank Sinatra and animals.

Not to be forgotten, during his service in Vietnam was Herbert's introduction to the young woman, Lan Le Thi, who would change the course of his life and it wasn't long before the couple found themselves deeply in love. ?They were wed on April 24, 1972 in South Vietnam, came back to California together where they cared for his aging parents and welcomed two sons into their hearts and home. ?Herb loved having dogs around, too, and their dogs Rosie, Spot and Muffin were an important part of the family for many happy years.

All who knew Herbert would agree that he was truly beautiful on the inside and out. ?He could act grumpy and in an instant was quick to forgive. ?Herbert treasured his friends and family and he was so very proud of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. ?He will be missed for his compassion, generosity, but his unconditional love will be missed most of all.

Herbert is survived by his wife, of 42 years, Lan Nickell; children, Lorrel (William) Ecklund, Laura (Matthew) Pleines, Lewis (Gina) Nickell, Jimmy (Michele) Nickell, David (Lucy) Nickell, Fred (Karen) Nickell; grandchildren, Amber (Cameron) Kirk, Ashley Almaguer, Chad, Dylan, Britni, Robin, JD, Hayden, Riley, Eric, Jayde, McKenzi, Alexander and Chloe; great-grandchildren, Annabelle and Amelia.

The family will greet friends on Thursday, April 16, 2015 from 4:00-8:00 pm at the Mount Vernon Memorial Park and Mortuary, Washington Suite, 8201 Greenback Lane, Fair Oaks, CA 95628.
