Joella Moncrief Sparks was born on May 14, 1926 in Deport, Texas. Our beloved Joella, or 'Nonnie,' passed away peacefully on Monday, September 4 at the age of 91. Joella was the epitome of class and grace, and led a vibrant and fulfilling life. After marrying her first husband J.D. in 1946, she and her two sons Jack and David moved to Fairbanks, Alaska where she grew into a true pioneer. At that time, Alaska was not yet a state in the union and life was incredibly harsh. She braved the difficult life in Alaska for five years, often travelling about in a military surplus weasel tractor. In 1951 she and her family moved to Sacramento, California where she began working for the Department of the Navy as an executive secretary. She later became a certified court reporter for the state of California, working at the Sacramento County Courthouse. Following her retirement from court reporting in 1978, she dedicated her time to playing the piano, tennis, romance novels, cooking, and her family. After the passing of J.D. in 1988, she married Duane Sparks in 1991. Together they traveled to Chile, Tibet and parts of the Middle East, among other regions. Joella is survived by her son Jack, her daughter in law Karol, her grandchildren Jordan and Haley, and her dog Libby. We are very grateful to to the Sparks family for the many years of love and support. A very special thanks to Canterbury House and Kaiser Permanente.
